What are your music teachers like?

I have a music teacher who’s quite difficult to deal with. Even though music is a minor subject at my school, she approaches it as if it were a major one. She expects us to prepare for tests days in advance, while many of us are concentrating on more intensive subjects like math or science. Then she gets really upset when the majority of us don’t perform well on the tests. In our school, the passing grade is 70, and during a recent test, we had to read notes while doing a complicated hand sign and maintaining the correct pitch. Out of 35 students in the class, only 2 scored above 70. She expressed her confusion about our results, as if we were all supposed to excel in something most of us aren’t even interested in.

Just to add, music is a required subject for me.

Anyway, sorry for the rant. How are your music teachers?

  1. It sounds like you’re having a really frustrating experience in music class! It can be tough when a subject feels like it’s being treated too seriously, especially when it’s not something many students are passionate about. I can see how that kind of pressure could be overwhelming, especially with other core subjects demanding your attention.

In my experience, music teachers can vary quite a bit. Some are really inspiring and make learning fun, while others can be more strict and demanding. It seems like your teacher is focused on proficiency and perhaps lost sight of the fact that not everyone shares the same enthusiasm for music. It’s important for teachers to strike a balance between expectation and understanding.

Have you thought about talking to her about how the class feels? It might help to let her know that while music is required, not everyone is aiming to become a musician. Getting that kind of feedback could encourage her to adjust her teaching style, or at least her expectations. Hang in there!
