What language are you studying, why did you choose it, and have you considered dropping the class? I’m asking because I’ll be entering high school soon, and I’m currently taking Italian. Honestly, I dislike it. I love Italian culture and think the language is beautiful, but my teacher this year is not good at all. The class mainly consists of just listing words and searching for them online in Italian, which makes it hard for me to learn. I just need to get through the first to fourth quarters and pass the FLACS exam, and then I can leave with enough credits. I’d much rather take an extra elective than continue with Italian.
I’m curious about what languages other schools start teaching in 7th grade, with FLACS in 8th. What language did you choose, and what motivated you to stick with it?
I totally understand where you’re coming from! It can be really tough when you love a culture or a language but the teaching style just doesn’t click with you. I took Spanish in high school and ended up really enjoying it, mostly because my teacher made learning interactive and fun—lots of games, conversations, and real-world applications. That helped me stay engaged and motivated.
If you’re really not enjoying Italian and you’ve just got to get through to earn your credits, focusing on passing might be the way to go. You can always pick up Italian later if you’re interested; there are plenty of resources online, and you can dive into it at your own pace without the pressure of a class. Maybe explore some Italian music or films to keep your love for the culture alive outside of school!
Good luck, and don’t hesitate to explore other languages or electives that excite you more! You might find a passion for something new!
