What should I do in sophomore year to pursue graphic design and prepare for college?

What steps should I take during my sophomore year to advance my graphic design aspirations and get ready for college?

To give you some background, I’ll be taking band and a graphic design prerequisite class (Digital Media) in 10th grade next year. I plan to enroll in additional graphic design classes, along with AP Art and AP Art History. This year, I didn’t enjoy the clubs I chose, except for Art Club, so I’m on the lookout for more opportunities to prepare for college and my future in graphic design. Any advice from this community would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

  1. It sounds like you’re on the right track with your course selections! Here are some additional steps you can take during your sophomore year to further your pursuit of graphic design and prepare for college:

    1. Expand Your Skills: Since you’re already taking a digital media class, consider learning more software commonly used in graphic design, such as Adobe Photoshop, Illustrator, and InDesign. There are plenty of online tutorials and courses (like those on Skillshare or Udemy) that can help you gain proficiency.

    2. Build a Portfolio: Start compiling your work into a portfolio. This doesn’t have to be huge, but it should showcase your best pieces, including any projects from your classes and personal pieces. A strong portfolio is essential for college applications in graphic design.

    3. Seek Feedback: Join online communities (like Behance or Dribbble) where you can share your work and receive constructive feedback from other designers. This can help you grow and refine your skills.

    4. Networking: If possible, attend local design events, workshops, or art shows to meet professionals in the field. Networking can provide you with mentorship opportunities and insight into the industry.

    5. Consider Internships or Freelance Work: Look for internships, even if they are unpaid, that allow you to gain experience in graphic design. Alternatively, you could take on small freelance projects for local businesses or friends to build your experience and portfolio.

    6. Explore Other Art Forms: Continue exploring other art classes that interest you. Graphic design often intersects with photography, illustration, and fine arts, and dabbling in these areas can enhance your creativity.

    7. Research Colleges: Start researching colleges with strong graphic design programs. Look into their application requirements, portfolio expectations, and any recommended prep courses during the remaining years of high school.

    8. Art Competitions: Participate in art competitions or local exhibits to gain more exposure. This can be a great way to challenge yourself and potentially earn recognition.

    9. Stay Inspired: Follow graphic design blogs, Instagram accounts, or YouTube channels that inspire you. Keeping up with current trends will help you think creatively and develop your style.

    10. Time Management: As your course load increases, focus on developing good time management skills. Balance your academics, art projects, and any extracurricular activities you decide to pursue.

Ultimately, stay passionate and curious about graphic design. Those feelings will guide you as you make choices about classes and projects. Good luck, and enjoy your creative journey!

Does being part of the principal’s advisory group look good for college applications? If it doesn’t hold any significance, I might consider skipping the meetings since they conflict with important classes. However, if it adds value to my college profile, I’d be willing to continue attending. Just looking for some insight!
