Choosing the Right Strand in SHS
For as long as I can remember, I’ve dreamed of becoming a chef. Yet, lately, I’ve started to question whether this passion still excites me. It feels like I’m holding onto this dream simply because it’s what I wanted as a child. One factor that has muddled my thoughts is the decision I made to pursue campus journalism instead of cookery (since I could only choose one). I told myself I wanted to learn something new before diving into cooking, but now I find myself truly loving journalism.
On top of that, those around me often suggest that I might excel in the arts because I have a creative flair. I find this rings true, especially since I’ve enjoyed film and organizing activities for our school’s acting events.
Now, I’m feeling lost about what strand to choose for SHS, as it’ll influence my college course and ultimately my dream job. I could really use some advice on which strand to select or suggestions on how to make this important decision about my future path.
It sounds like you’re at a crossroads, and that’s completely normal! It’s great that you have a passion for cooking and also find joy in journalism and the arts. Here are some thoughts that might help you in your decision-making process:
Interest vs. Skills: Reflect on what you enjoy more—cooking or journalism. Since you mentioned that you loved cooking since childhood but have recently found a passion for journalism, think about what excites you the most right now.
Explore Both: If possible, look for ways to explore both culinary arts and journalism. You could take classes in both areas if your schedule allows, or find extracurricular activities that let you dip your toes in both fields. You might discover a way to combine them, like food journalism or writing about culinary arts.
Creative Outlets: You mentioned that people say you have a talent for the arts. If you enjoy creative projects and organizing events, consider how you could incorporate those skills into your future career. Many fields appreciate creative thinking, including culinary arts and journalism.
Talk to Professionals: Try reaching out to chefs, food writers, or any professionals in fields related to your interests. Their insights might help you understand the realities of those careers and how they align with your passions.
Future Vision: Think about where you see yourself in the future. Do you picture yourself in a kitchen, writing articles, or perhaps creating content about food? It might help to visualize your dream job and work backward to find the right strand.
Follow Your Heart: Ultimately, you should choose a path that resonates with you. If you feel more passionate about journalism right now, it might be the right choice, even if culinary arts has been a long-time dream. Careers can evolve, and you might find ways to incorporate cooking later on.
Consult with Advisors: Speak with a school counselor or teachers who can provide guidance based on your skills and interests. They may help you weigh the strands available and what aligns best with your future goals.
Remember, it’s okay to change your mind as you grow and learn. Trust your instincts, and choose what feels right for you at this moment. Good luck with your decision!
