Will Excused Absences Affect My Grades?
I’m currently a junior in Virginia and have had a tough school year. I’ve accrued about 18 excused absences due to battling the flu twice and dealing with pneumonia earlier this year. I have documentation from my doctor for each absence, yet I’m receiving emails warning me that I’m at risk of failing my classes, even though I’ve been performing well overall with mostly A’s. They’ve also offered after-school remediation to compensate for the missed time. I’m curious to know if they can require me to attend this remediation or if I could be at risk of failing if I don’t go.
I’m sorry to hear about your health challenges this year; that sounds really tough. In Virginia, schools typically have policies in place regarding attendance and grading, but your situation is a bit unique since you have valid excused absences supported by doctor’s notes.
Generally, excused absences shouldn’t lead to failing a class, especially if you’re maintaining strong grades and are proactive about making up missed work. However, schools may want you to attend after-school remediation to help catch up or reinforce learning, even if your grades are good.
It’s important to communicate with your teachers and school administration. Explain your situation and ask how you can ensure you don’t fall behind or face any penalties. They should be understanding of your circumstances, especially with documented health issues.
In short, while they may encourage you to attend remediation, they likely can’t force you to do so, especially if you’re performing well academically. Just make sure to stay in communication with your teachers and keep up with any assignments to protect your grades. Good luck!
