Would it look bad if I take a class a second time even though I passed it the first time?

Is it frowned upon to retake a class after already passing it? I’m considering enrolling in Calculus 1 at a community college because my first experience with it was online, and I feel like I didn’t grasp the material well. If I later transfer to a four-year university with both attempts of Calculus 1 on my transcript, would that reflect poorly on me?

Additionally, my intended major for transfer requires Calculus 2.

  1. It’s completely understandable to want to reinforce your learning, especially with a subject as foundational as calculus. Taking a class again to solidify your understanding is a proactive approach and shows your commitment to mastering the material.

Colleges generally understand that students sometimes need to retake courses for various reasons, including wanting a stronger grasp on the subject. Having two Calculus 1 classes on your transcript might raise a question, but it’s unlikely to hurt your application—especially if you can explain your reasoning in your personal statement or during interviews.

Moreover, since your intended major requires Calculus 2, demonstrating a solid foundation in Calculus 1 is crucial. If you feel that you didn’t learn much from the online format, taking the class again could be beneficial not only for your academic record but also for your confidence moving forward.

Just make sure to focus on ways to demonstrate your learning and improvement when you apply to transfer. Good luck!
