As a student, it’s not uncommon to face challenges in the classroom, especially when it comes to grading. Recently, I found myself in a situation that left me questioning whether I had acted appropriately in addressing my concerns with a professor. Here’s a glimpse into my experience and the lessons I learned along the way.

The Dilemma

I’m currently enrolled in a class and lab run by a professor who has yet to grade any assignments, exams, or labs. As the semester edges closer to the finish line, my peers and I find ourselves in the dark about our academic performance. Initially, I assumed my professor was simply swamped with grading tasks. However, as weeks turned into months without any feedback, I began to realize that the situation was far from normal.

After receiving my first exam back, which had no grade recorded, a wave of anxiety washed over me. Conversations with classmates confirmed that many were equally unsettled about the lack of communication and evaluation. Concerned about our academic futures, I decided to take action.

In a moment of determination, I reached out to my professor and also included the department chair in the conversation. My intention was not to escalate things unnecessarily but to seek clarification and support for myself and my classmates. As I prepare for a meeting with both the professor and the department chair next week, I can’t help but feel a mix of nerves and uncertainty. Did I overreact? Or was my concern valid in light of the circumstances? While it’s easy to feel like I might have crossed a line, I also recognize that advocating for clarity in my education is essential.
