Why I love my “worthless” liberal arts degree

Embracing the Value of a Liberal Arts Degree: My Journey

As I approach the culmination of my academic journey with an Associate’s degree in Liberal Arts, I reflect on how this path, which initially seemed accidental, has become a cornerstone of my educational experience. Though I didn’t consciously choose this field—being placed in it due to my undecided status—it’s proven to be an invaluable foundation for my future studies and career aspirations.

I am thrilled to announce my plans to pursue a Bachelor’s degree with a major in Accounting and a minor in Computer Information Systems (CIS). Additionally, I’m eager to explore courses in artificial intelligence. While these subjects are undoubtedly crucial for my professional trajectory, I firmly believe that my liberal arts background will set me apart from my peers in the competitive job market.

One of the most enriching aspects of my liberal arts education has been the diversity of courses available to me. I had the opportunity to delve into various disciplines, including political science, humanities, social sciences, as well as writing, mathematics, and natural sciences. Each subject offered a unique lens through which to understand the world, broadening my perspective in ways I never anticipated.

Moreover, my time in this program enabled me to acquire practical skills beyond traditional academics. I earned certifications in First Aid and Basic Life Support (BLS), learned about healthier eating habits, and developed a deeper appreciation for the complexities of society. Every class contributed to my personal growth, enriching my cognitive toolkit with critical thinking and effective communication skills—qualities that are essential in any field.

Despite the prevailing skepticism surrounding liberal arts degrees, I have found immense value in mine. Each experience has shaped my worldview and equipped me with a multifaceted understanding of people, cultures, and ideas. As I continue my education and venture into new subjects, I carry with me the confidence that my liberal arts degree will always bring a unique and enriching perspective to my professional life.

In a world that often prioritizes practicality over creativity, I stand by the belief that my liberal arts education is anything but “worthless.” It has profoundly impacted my life, and for that, I am truly grateful.
