College Degree was the best investment of my life.

Why Pursuing a Technical Degree Was the Best Investment of My Life

When I look back on my educational and professional journey, I truly believe that earning a technical bachelor’s degree has been one of the most valuable decisions I’ve ever made.

My academic path began at Stony Brook University, where I studied from 2008 to 2012. During this time, I completed dual bachelor’s degrees—one in Applied Mathematics and Statistics, and the other in Economics. Since these fields shared many overlapping courses, I decided to pursue a second degree in Economics by taking just nine additional classes. It seemed like a smart move to expand my skill set without significantly increasing my time in school.

After graduation, I initially struggled to find my footing in the workforce. I spent a few years driving a taxi, realizing that a degree alone wasn’t enough—you also need practical skills to succeed. Fast forward to 2019, I decided to learn coding and enrolled in a software development Bootcamp.

During the Bootcamp, I noticed that many of my peers held degrees in engineering or computer science, while I had a background in Applied Mathematics. This technical foundation proved to be a key advantage, allowing me to grasp complex concepts faster and excel in learning SQL, SSRS, and Power BI. Over time, my proficiency in Power BI grew, and today I work on IT contracts earning around $80 per hour.

Looking back, I firmly believe that my technical bachelor’s degree was instrumental in achieving this level of success. The financial benefits have been substantial: over the past few years, I have paid off two houses belonging to my parents, invested thrivingly in the stock market, and recently purchased a new 4,000-square-foot home on Long Island, NY, with my mother.

My story underscores the importance of acquiring tangible technical skills alongside your education. If you’re contemplating your next move or educational investment, I strongly recommend pursuing a technical bachelor’s degree. The earning potential and opportunities it unlocks can transform your life.

Thank you for taking the time to read my story.
