Celebrating Success: Supporting the Next Generation in Higher Education
As a first-generation college student, I want to share a proud moment that truly warms my heart. I am the first in my family to graduate from high school and to pursue higher education. My journey has been filled with both challenges and significant milestones. I am currently working toward earning two associate degrees this spring, with plans to continue on to earn a bachelor’s degree.
The path to this point hasn’t been straightforward. I faced many obstacles, especially in figuring out the logistics—how to apply for financial aid, understand credit systems, and navigate the complexities of degree requirements. Asking for assistance from my school often felt embarrassing, and I couldn’t rely on my family for guidance; they didn’t have answers or weren’t able to help.
Recently, my younger cousin has shown a lot of curiosity about college and the educational process. She decided to earn her GED and is planning to attend college afterward. Seeing her take these steps fills me with immense pride. I am grateful that I can be a source of support for her, something I always wished I had during my own journey. I’ve been helping her complete the FAFSA application, advising her on choosing initial courses, and even giving her some of my old textbooks to help her save money.
This experience has reaffirmed how impactful supporting the next generation can be. It’s rewarding to know that my efforts are making college more accessible for her, easing her path through the steps I once struggled with. Supporting my younger siblings and cousins has always been a motivating factor in my pursuit of higher education. They inspire me to keep pushing forward, and knowing that my work is making a difference is truly heartening.
Sharing this milestone reminds me why perseverance is essential and highlights the importance of lifting others along the way. I hope this story inspires others to support their loved ones as they take their own educational steps forward.
