Is It Wrong to Skip My High School Graduation Due to College Plans?
As my graduation day approaches, I’ve been reflecting on whether I should attend the ceremony. Honestly, I feel hesitant to participate, and I wonder if I’m overthinking the situation.
Here’s the context: I’ll be graduating soon, but I see little value in walking across the stage. Taking part would mean publicly tying myself to a low-ranked college, and I’m not expecting to receive any honors. Both my parents and I are disappointed with my high school academic performance and overall GPA. What’s more, a significant portion of my graduating class is moving on to prestigious T20 schools, while I’ll be attending a smaller, lesser-known college.
Given these circumstances, I’m contemplating whether skipping graduation is a reasonable choice to avoid feelings of embarrassment—both mine and my family’s. I’ve heard there’s an option to receive my diploma privately, which might help me sidestep the usual ceremony.
Is it unreasonable to consider not attending simply because of the college I’m heading to? I’d appreciate insights on whether this decision is understandable or if it might be perceived as disrespectful. Thank you for your thoughts.
