Understanding the Impact of Single-Gender Spaces on Inclusivity for Gender-Diverse Individuals
As a high school senior currently completing my Society and Culture major project, I am exploring a topic that I believe is increasingly relevant in today’s diverse societies: the role of single-gender environments and their influence on the inclusion of gender-diverse populations.
My research focuses on how the rise in segregated, homosocial spaces—such as sports teams, scouting groups, religious organizations, and youth clubs—affects the participation and acceptance of individuals identifying outside the traditional gender binary. I aim to shed light on whether these spaces foster acceptance or inadvertently contribute to exclusion.
To gather insights, I’ve developed a brief survey accessible to individuals of all backgrounds. Rest assured, it does not collect any personally identifiable information, other than demographic details such as gender identity, country of residence, and age group. Sharing this survey here is driven by my hope that others who are engaged in similar projects or are part of single-gender communities—particularly youth groups, sports, or religious organizations—might contribute.
Your participation is highly valued, especially from gender-diverse and transgender individuals, as response numbers are currently limited. Your perspectives are crucial to understanding the broader impact of these spaces.
Additionally, I am more than willing to exchange insights or assist others working on similar research topics. If you’re conducting a project related to gender inclusion or segregation, I’m happy to offer advice or share experiences—having completed my course in less than a month and passionate about this subject.
Thank you for considering contributing to this important discussion. Your input will help foster a better understanding of how these environments can evolve to become more inclusive for everyone.
