Preparing for the GED: Essential Math Skills for a Self-Taught Learner
As a young individual approaching my 17th birthday, I find myself reflecting on my educational journey. I started homeschooling in late 2019, amidst the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, at the second semester of fifth grade. However, due to limited guidance and self-directed instruction, I never progressed beyond that level academically. Recognizing the need to catch up, especially in math—an essential component of the GED—I’ve begun to teach myself the foundational concepts.
Over the past week, I’ve revisited basic arithmetic operations, including addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I feel confident with these skills now. Moving forward, I realize that understanding fractions is the next critical step, but I’m unsure where to start with that topic.
To anyone with experience in GED preparation or educational guidance: What is a comprehensive list of math topics I should focus on to ensure I can pass the exam successfully? My goal isn’t to become a math enthusiast but to acquire enough knowledge to earn a good grade. Writing is more my strong suit academically, but I understand the importance of having the necessary math skills for the GED.
For those familiar with Texas requirements, please note that I’m preparing to meet state standards. I am open to questions and would appreciate any advice or resources—thank you to everyone who takes the time to help!
