I go to school in Hawaii in my school has a number of problems and crazy stories but every time it happens to school tries to bury it every time and and sometimes if you talk about the problem out loud to acquaintance or somebody you’re sometimes sent to the principal’s office

Understanding the Challenges Within Hawaii’s Education System: Personal Reflections and Stories

The educational landscape in Hawaii presents a complex mix of experiences, often marked by difficult issues that remain unaddressed. Many students and staff navigate a system that frequently prefers to conceal problems rather than confront them directly. Speaking out about difficulties can sometimes lead to repercussions, including disciplinary measures like being called to the principal’s office, even when discussing serious concerns.

A recent and troubling incident highlights some of these systemic issues. An English teacher, who also served as a special education instructor, was arrested on charges of sexual assault involving a minor over an extended period. Reflecting on this, it’s apparent that warning signs were observable—yet they were largely ignored because the teacher was well-liked and considered “cool” by students and staff alike. Interestingly, school policies stated that discussing such incidents publicly could result in disciplinary action, but enforcement was inconsistent. This teacher used to host student council members at his residence—located conveniently next to the school—with permission slips indicating official approval. His classroom environment was informal, featuring a favorite chair that students could sit in all day, and even letting students skip classes at will. The classroom was often relaxed to the point of being unproductive, with students spending time on their devices or watching cartoons. Although he’s no longer there, I recall the comfort I found in that chair—it’s a small but tangible memory of a tumultuous time.

When the substitute teacher replaced him, a more engaged educator stepped in, though he quickly removed the casual fixtures of the previous classroom, including the cherished chair. These stories only scratch the surface of issues in Hawaiian schools.

Another concerning event occurred early in my sophomore year, involving the sudden death of a student believed to have fallen from a window while under the influence of drugs—though some speculate it was a suicide. The incident was only mentioned once and was promptly swept under the rug, with no further discussion or explanation provided. Similarly, the previous year saw the tragic death of a girl hit by a car near the school—an event widely covered in the media, with a week of mourning. Strangely, the death of the boy involved was almost ignored in comparison, highlighting inconsistencies in how such tragedies are acknowledged depending on the students’ social standing.

Hawaiian schools also grapple with issues related to student behavior and safety. At my previous school, students documented fights and other misconduct on social media platforms like Instagram. One distressing video captured a girl losing her top
