is it worth majoring in women’s, gender, & sexuality studies?

Is Pursuing a Degree in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies Worth It?

Deciding on a college major is a significant step, especially when your passions align with areas like gender equality and social justice. Recently, I’ve been contemplating whether majoring in Women’s, Gender, & Sexuality Studies (WGSS) is a smart choice, and I wanted to share and seek insights from a broader community.

My dedication to combating gender-based violence drives my career aspirations. I believe deeply in advocating for gender equity, and I want my academic path to reflect that commitment. However, I’ve encountered a range of reactions from friends and peers whenever I mention my interest in WGSS. Laughter, skepticism, and comments about future job prospects—such as worries about employment stability and income potential—are common responses. Some even suggest that, especially in the current political climate, this field has become less relevant or “useless,” which deeply discourages me.

Despite these opinions, I personally see the study of gender issues as more crucial than ever. The need to address gender disparities and promote equality continues to grow, making this field incredibly relevant and impactful. I wonder if my perception is naïve—am I making a mistake by choosing a major that others dismiss? Would it be wiser to pursue a more traditionally “respected” major like Sociology, perhaps adding a concentration in gender studies?

Ultimately, I’d love to hear perspectives from a diverse audience. Does a major in WGSS hold value in today’s job market? How can I leverage this degree or its focus areas for meaningful careers?

Update: I am also considering further graduate studies such as a Master of Social Work (MSW) or a Master of Public Health (MPH) after completing my undergraduate program. Any advice regarding these paths or how they align with a background in WGSS would be greatly appreciated.

Your insights and experiences mean a lot – thank you for helping me navigate this important decision!
