Understanding Social Norms and Personal Boundaries: A Reflection

In social interactions, a simple greeting can often carry more significance than we realize. However, it’s important to recognize that not everyone processes or expresses social cues in the same way. Many individuals, especially those who are more introverted or navigating new environments, might have different comfort levels when it comes to initiating conversations or greetings.

Recently, I found myself reflecting on these differences, particularly as I transitioned to a new school during my junior year. Unlike my previous experiences, where close acquaintances were familiar with each other’s routines, my current environment feels somewhat overwhelming. Here, it’s common for students to greet everyone they see—even those they do not know well. As someone who is naturally reserved, I initially tried to engage in this social norm. Over time, I realized that simply acknowledging acquaintances with a polite smile or a nod is often sufficient for me—without the need for a formal greeting.

Now in my senior year, I tend to be quite selective with my social interactions. Many days, I am exhausted and sleep-deprived, making it difficult to keep track of social expectations. Despite this, I sometimes encounter the assumption that I am unfriendly or rude because I don’t say hi to everyone. But the truth is, we all have our moods and energy levels, and there are times when simply being present and respectful is enough.

It’s worth questioning why a genuine smile isn’t sufficient in these situations. The social norm of constant greeting can be overwhelming for some, and perhaps it’s time to understand that politeness can take many forms.

Please note, English is not my first language, so I apologize if my expression isn’t always perfect. Still, I hope this sheds light on the importance of respecting individual differences in social behavior.

Remember, sometimes a kind glance or a respectful silence speaks volumes. Let’s be mindful of each other’s boundaries and avoid assumptions about someone’s character based on superficial interactions.

Thank you for taking the time to read my thoughts.
