Understanding Social Norms and Personal Boundaries: A Reflection on Communication

In today’s interconnected world, social interactions are often guided by unwritten norms and expectations. However, it’s important to recognize that everyone has their own communication style and comfort levels, which may not always align with those norms.

Recently, I noticed that in my new school environment — which I joined during my junior year — there is a strong culture of greeting everyone openly. While I appreciate the friendliness, I personally come from a more reserved background. I’m not naturally social, and I find it challenging to initiate conversations with acquaintances or strangers. To adapt, I initially tried greeting everyone I saw. Over time, however, I realized that acknowledging familiar faces with a simple smile or a nod is enough for me, especially since I often feel exhausted and overwhelmed, given my busy schedule and sleep deprivation.

As a senior, I tend to keep to myself and interact primarily with those I know well. I’ve noticed that some people might interpret my quiet demeanor or lack of regular greetings as disinterest or even hostility. But the truth is, I simply prioritize my well-being and sometimes just don’t have the energy to engage. It’s frustrating to think that a polite smile isn’t considered enough — that not explicitly saying “hi” implies negativity or aloofness.

I understand social expectations, but I believe that respecting personal boundaries and understanding different communication styles are equally important. Not everyone needs to be overly expressive or socially engaged at all times. It’s okay to have moments of silence or to prefer minimal interaction.

Please forgive any language errors — English is not my first language, and I’m still working on expressing myself clearly. My hope is to foster a bit more awareness and empathy for those who may communicate differently, especially in diverse social environments.

Remember, a simple smile can convey kindness just as much as words, and understanding varies from person to person. Let’s promote patience and respect in our interactions.
