Was comparing my GOOD GPA (3.8/4.3) with my friends with a BETTER GPA ( 4.0/idk w) but then I realised I have better course rigor, take harder classes so I shouldn’t be comparing.

The Trap of Comparing Academic Achievements: Why Focus on Your Unique Path Matters

In the journey of academic success, it’s easy to fall into the trap of comparing ourselves to others. Recently, I found myself reflecting on my academic record—a 3.8 on a 4.3 scale—and comparing it to a friend’s seemingly higher GPA of 4.0 (or possibly more). At first glance, it seemed like I was falling short, but a moment of clarity helped me see the bigger picture.

What I realized is that my coursework is significantly more challenging. I take advanced classes with greater rigor, which naturally impacts my overall GPA. While my friend is also pre-med, she hasn’t enrolled in certain demanding courses like AP Chemistry, which further explains the GPA differences.

Moreover, my extracurricular activities are superior, demonstrating leadership and commitment beyond academics. My class schedule includes honors and AP courses that show my dedication and ability to handle a tough curriculum.

I’ve come to understand that college admissions highly value the rigor of coursework alongside GPA. Therefore, comparison isn’t just unfair—it’s misguided. Everyone’s academic journey is unique, shaped by the choices they make and the opportunities they pursue.

It’s important to focus on your personal growth and achievements rather than how you measure up to others. Embracing your individual path can be more satisfying and lead to greater confidence in your future endeavors.
