When is it too late or early to start college admissions?

Determining the Right Time to Begin Your College Admission Journey

Embarking on the college application process can be both exhilarating and daunting, especially for students navigating unique challenges. As a rising junior, I find myself caught between the excitement of future opportunities and the uncertainties of the path ahead. This year, I’m eager to accelerate my preparations and gain clarity on my college options, particularly aiming for the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD). RISD stands out as one of the premier private art institutions in the country, rivaling CalArts, which I also considered but eventually decided against in favor of RISD.

Given that my parents often handle communications with schools and educators, I’ve taken it upon myself to reach out directly—particularly the disability accommodations office—to explore the support services available to me. With my upcoming half-days in my senior year, I plan to attend virtual information sessions and schedule online meetings about financial aid during school breaks or even while on the go, sometimes using my car as a quiet space. Once I get my own vehicle this year, I also plan to seek employment at a local Buc-ee’s to earn extra income, making efficient use of my time, as I usually complete work projects within two hours.

If there are any current juniors or seniors reading this, I would greatly appreciate any advice or tips you could share to help guide me through this process.

Additionally, my educational journey is somewhat unconventional this year—I’m homeschooling for half of it, although plans are still being finalized. My younger sister, a high school freshman, already has colleges expressing interest in her, which adds to the mixed emotions I experience. Due to my learning disability, I’ve often struggled academically and am aware that my parents prefer I start at a community college before transferring to a university. However, I fear that beginning at a community college might leave me feeling left behind or uninspired compared to peers gaining direct college admissions.

Navigating college admissions is a deeply personal experience, and there’s no one-size-fits-all answer to when it’s too early or too late to start. For some, early preparation provides confidence and options; for others, waiting until they’re truly ready may be the best approach. Ultimately, understanding your own needs, seeking support, and planning ahead are vital steps toward a successful admission journey.
