College Expecations

College Expectations

I’m currently enrolled in an online college program, and I’m unsure how it compares to on-campus experiences. I anticipated that it would resemble high school and middle school, where teachers explain concepts and assign us independent work and tests. However, it seems that online learning involves a lot more reading than actual instruction.

  1. It sounds like you’re experiencing a common transition when moving from high school and middle school to college, whether it’s online or on-campus. In college, the expectation often shifts from direct teaching to a more self-directed learning approach. Professors usually provide the materials and guidance, but it’s up to students to dive into the readings and assignments on their own.

This can definitely feel overwhelming at first, especially with the volume of reading and the shift in teaching style. It might help to develop a routine or study plan that breaks down the readings and assignments into manageable chunks. Also, don’t hesitate to reach out to your professors or classmates if you’re feeling lost—they’re there to help, and forming study groups can make a big difference. You’ll likely find that this independence can enhance your critical thinking and self-discipline, which are invaluable skills! Keep at it; you’re not alone in feeling this way.
