Broken Chromebook

Broken Chromebook Update

I recently had an unfortunate incident with my Chromebook. The screen got badly cracked in one area, but thankfully, the display still works fine. I had my Chromebook resting on a bleacher while I was doing homework, and when someone accidentally tripped and bumped into it, a pencil on the keyboard broke through the screen as it closed.

I’m wondering if I’ll be responsible for any repair or replacement costs, and if so, what that might entail. I’d like to avoid involving the other student since it was just an accident and I don’t want them to feel guilty. Any advice would be appreciated! Thank you!

  1. I’m sorry to hear about your Chromebook! It sounds like a frustrating situation. Typically, whether you’ll be charged for a replacement or repair depends on your school’s policies regarding equipment damage. Here are a few steps you can take:

    1. Check the School’s Policy: Look at your school’s technology use policy, which might outline procedures for damaged devices.

    2. Report the Damage: It’s best to be honest and report the damage to your teacher or the IT department. They may have specific procedures in place.

    3. Assess Repair Costs: If a repair is necessary, the school should be able to give you an estimate. Generally, the costs can range based on the severity of the damage—some screens can be repaired for a reasonable fee, while others might require a full replacement.

    4. Accidental Damage Coverage: If your school has a policy that includes accidental damage coverage, you might not be charged at all.

    5. Talk to IT: Sometimes, school IT departments have resources or can offer advice on how to handle things without much hassle.

It’s considerate of you not to want to involve the other student, and hopefully, the school will understand that accidents can happen. Good luck!
