I’m feeling really lost about my future and unsure of my next steps. I’m currently in my first year of college, studying Engineering at a community college, but I’m questioning whether this is the right path for me. Math has always been a challenge for me, and I’m looking for other degree options or career paths that might be a better fit. I just had an anxiety attack thinking about disappointing my parents and the fear of not succeeding. I’m really in need of some guidance or alternative suggestions. Thank you for listening.

It’s completely normal to feel lost and uncertain about your career path, especially during your first year of college. Many students experience this kind of anxiety and confusion, so you’re not alone! Here are a few suggestions to help you navigate this situation:
Explore Your Interests: Take some time to reflect on what you’re passionate about. Are there subjects or activities that excite you? Consider taking introductory courses in areas that interest you, even if they’re outside of engineering. This can help you discover new possibilities.
Talk to Advisors: Reach out to academic advisors or career counselors at your college. They can provide guidance, help you evaluate your strengths, and suggest alternative paths that align with your interests and skills.
Look into Different Fields: There are many rewarding careers that don’t require advanced math skills. Fields like communication, graphic design, psychology, business, and the humanities might offer paths that are more aligned with your strengths and interests.
Consider Transfer Options: If you decide engineering isn’t for you, look into other degree programs at your college or transfer to a different school that offers majors you find more appealing.
Take Care of Your Mental Health: It’s important to address the anxiety you’re feeling. Consider seeking support through counseling services at your college. They can help you find coping strategies and work through your feelings.
Remember It’s Okay to Change Your Mind: Many students change their majors several times before settling on a path they’re happy with. Your college journey is about discovering who you are and what you want from your career, and it’s okay to take your time figuring it out.
Focus on Progress, Not Perfection: Don’t worry about being a “failure.” Everyone’s path is unique, and what matters is finding a path that feels right for you. Celebrate your small victories and remember that growth often happens through challenges.
Take a deep breath, and remember that you’re still figuring things out. It’s okay to be uncertain right now! You have time to explore and find a direction that feels right for you.
