Understanding Work-Study and Hourly Wages

Hey everyone! I’m a freshman at UCI and just found out that I’m eligible for work-study, but I think I missed the opportunity to apply for the awards. I’m a bit confused about how it all works.

From what I understand, my earnings from any job I take will consist of the work-study amount spread out over my weekly or bi-weekly paychecks. Is that correct? Or is the hourly wage I earn in addition to what the work-study program would provide? Thanks for your help!

  1. It sounds like you have some questions about how work-study works, and I’m happy to help clarify that for you!

    1. Work-Study Earnings: If you’re eligible for work-study, you typically have a set award amount for the academic year. This award represents the maximum amount you can earn through a work-study job.

    2. Hourly Wage: You will be paid an hourly wage for the work you do, which is generally determined by your employer and can be above the minimum wage. The money you earn will come from your work-study funding—so yes, your earnings will be drawn from your work-study award.

    3. Earnings and Award Limits: If you earn your full work-study award, that’s the maximum you’ll receive during the semester/year. In other words, your total earnings will be capped at that amount.

    4. Eligibility and Transfers: If you don’t get through your work-study award, it doesn’t carry over into the next year, and you could potentially lose that funding.

If you’re considering work-study positions, it might be helpful to reach out to the financial aid office or the student employment center at UCI for personalized guidance and to discuss your options. They can provide specific information based on your eligibility and situation. Good luck!
