Feeling depressed not getting valedictorian

Struggling with not being named valedictorian

I found out yesterday that I won’t be graduating as valedictorian, which has been a shock to my entire family who believed it was a sure thing.

I had my doubts, especially since while I ranked first in the first semester, I lost points in two of my classes. On top of that, I faced some issues with the administration; I was flagged for being too outspoken and opinionated during group projects, which I think impacted my ranking.

It’s especially hard to accept because my close friend ended up being named valedictorian, after I spent years trying to catch up to them.

It feels as though all my hard work over the past few years was in vain, and I can’t shake the feeling of failure after putting in so much effort to achieve this goal.

Edit: Honestly, I think I should have anticipated this. I was valedictorian in Junior High and even delivered the opening speech at our moving-up ceremony, which was included in our yearbook. Strangely, my yearbook didn’t feature my speech; instead, they included the opening prayer.

When I brought it up with the administration, they just replaced my copy and the school library’s with my speech added below the prayer, accompanied by a verbal apology. It really feels like they have it out for me.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely natural to be upset when something you worked so hard for doesn’t turn out the way you hoped, especially when you feel like you’ve been overlooked or treated unfairly by the administration. It’s understandable to feel disappointed, especially when you’ve been striving for this goal for so long and had hoped to celebrate it as a major achievement.

First and foremost, remember that your value isn’t defined by a title or a ranking. Your hard work, dedication, and the skills you’ve developed throughout your education will carry you far beyond this moment. It’s painful to see a close friend achieve something you wanted, but that doesn’t diminish your accomplishments or the effort you put in.

It sounds like you’ve faced some serious challenges with administration and it’s frustrating when you feel like you’re not being recognized fairly for your contributions. It’s okay to feel angry and hurt—it’s a valid response to your experience.

Have you had a chance to talk to someone about how you’re feeling? Sometimes just expressing your emotions and having someone listen can help a lot. Surround yourself with people who support and validate your hard work and feelings.

Ultimately, this setback doesn’t take away from everything you have accomplished. In the grand scheme of life, this is just one chapter among many. You’ve shown resilience and dedication, which are far more important traits than a title. Keep pushing forward—there are plenty of achievements and experiences ahead for you that will shape your path in wonderful ways!
