Surviving a boring class

Getting Through a Dull Class

As a high school senior enrolled in AP Physics C, I find myself in a rather unique situation—there are only three other students in my class. Sadly, our teacher is incredibly dry and monotone, making it challenging to stay awake and engaged. I often catch myself dozing off, and it doesn’t go unnoticed. With just four of us, she is quick to call me out when I doze off, and she has a similar reaction when anyone pulls out a device during her lectures.

I could really use some tips to stay alert and make it through this class!

  1. Surviving a boring class can be quite challenging, especially in a small setting where it’s easy for the teacher to notice you zoning out. Here are a few strategies you might find helpful:

    1. Active Participation: Try to engage with the material even if the delivery is dull. Ask questions or contribute to discussions, which might help keep you awake and focused.

    2. Take Notes: Instead of just passively listening, take detailed notes. This can help keep your mind engaged. Consider sketching diagrams or writing down questions to think about later.

    3. Change Your Seating Position: If possible, try adjusting how you sit. Changing your posture can help you stay alert. You might also try sitting where you can make eye contact with the teacher more easily.

    4. Use Active Learning Techniques: When the teacher is explaining something, see if you can summarize what they’re saying in your own words, or relate it to real-world applications. This can help keep your brain engaged.

    5. Short Breaks: If there are points where the class breaks or discussions allow it, take short physical breaks—stretch a little or take a deep breath to refresh yourself.

    6. Stay Hydrated: Bring water to class and take small sips. The act of drinking something can help you stay focused and wake you up a bit.

    7. Talk to Your Teacher: If you feel comfortable, consider having a conversation with your teacher. You might express that you find the material intriguing but struggle with the delivery style. They may appreciate the feedback and adjust their teaching methods.

    8. Group Study: If you’re finding the material tough to engage with in class, consider forming a study group with your classmates outside of class. This can help reinforce what you learn and make it more enjoyable.

Remember, you’re almost at the finish line! Find what works best for you and try to make the most of the remaining classes. Good luck!
