Why does finding a roommate feel like middle school dating?

The Hilarity of Roommate Search: A Throwback to Middle School Romance

When it comes to finding a roommate, it seems many of us find ourselves in an awkward, familiar territory reminiscent of middle school crushes. Recently, I reached out to a potential roommate through one of those social media platforms designed to connect classmates. We’ve been chatting casually on Instagram for several days now, and it feels like we’ve reverted back to our pre-teen selves—nervous, hesitant, and a bit bashful.

Our conversations unfold like those awkward early days of dating. Picture this:

Me: “So, have you found a roommate yet?”
Her: “No, not yet. How about you?”
Me: “Still looking.”
Her: “I hear (insert dorm name) has openings, though!”
Me: “Oh, that’s definitely my top choice!”
Her: “Same here!”

It’s almost comical how we circle around the topic, both clearly interested but too shy to make the leap. Despite knowing that I could easily break this cycle by directly proposing we room together, I find myself adopting a strategy of playing it cool.

Then, in a moment of courage (perhaps inspired by those middle school experiences), I finally asked her directly—and to my surprise, she said yes!

The whole process makes you realize how finding a roommate can sometimes mirror the insecurities and sweet awkwardness of young love. In the end, whether it’s a roommate or a romantic partner, taking that brave first step can lead to unexpected—and often delightful—results. So, if you find yourself in a similar situation, remember: just go for it! The outcome might just be worth the initial jitters.
