Do High School PE Teachers Still Make Students Stay Outdoors Despite Extreme Weather Conditions?

Many students reflect on their high school PE experiences and wonder: do current PE instructors still require students to participate outdoors regardless of the weather?

From personal observations and shared stories, it appears that some educators continue to enforce outdoor activity policies even during extreme heatwaves, sometimes disregarding the health and safety risks involved. In particularly hot days soaring above 90 degrees Fahrenheit, this practice can elevate students’ risk of heat-related illnesses, such as heat exhaustion or heatstroke.

Even more concerning is the reaction of some teachers when students seek shade or a break to cool down. Instead of understanding or accommodating these health concerns, some may respond with frustration or anger. Such attitudes can make students feel unsupported and unsafe during physically demanding activities.

It’s essential for modern physical education programs to prioritize student wellbeing. Ensuring outdoor activity is conducted safely, with allowances for breaks, shade, and hydration, is crucial. As educational institutions evolve, so should their approach to student health—balancing physical fitness with safety and comfort, regardless of weather conditions.
