What Math Skills Do I Need to Prepare for the GED? Seeking Guidance from a 16-Year-Old’s Perspective
As I approach my 17th birthday, I’ve come to an important realization about my educational journey. Since late 2019, during the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, my mother began homeschooling me. Unfortunately, I didn’t receive formal instruction beyond the fifth grade, and without encouragement or motivation to teach myself, I found it difficult to acquire new knowledge independently.
Despite these challenges, I recognize the necessity of taking responsibility for my learning—particularly in math—as part of my goal to obtain my GED. While passing the exam involves more than just math, it remains a critical component. Over the past week, I’ve been reviewing fundamental arithmetic skills: addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division. I feel confident handling these operations now.
With those basics covered, I believe the next step is understanding fractions—though I’m uncertain where to begin. I’d like to ask for advice: What are the essential topics I need to master to pass the GED in math?
To clarify, I am focused on gaining enough knowledge to secure a good score, not on becoming a math enthusiast. I prefer writing as my main academic interest, but I understand the importance of grasping enough math skills to meet the requirements.
I live in Texas, so I’ll be preparing according to the state’s standards, but I’m open to general advice applicable elsewhere as well. Please feel free to ask any questions or offer guidance in the comments. Thanks to everyone who takes the time to help!
