Understanding Social Norms and Personal Boundaries: A Reflection
Navigating social interactions can be challenging, especially for individuals who naturally lean towards introversion or are unfamiliar with certain social customs. Recently, I encountered feelings that prompted me to reflect on my own behavior and societal expectations.
In many environments, greeting others with a simple “hi” is considered a courteous and friendly gesture. However, for some people—myself included—this may not come as naturally. Having recently transferred schools in my junior year, I noticed a stark contrast: classmates often greet everyone they see, regardless of familiarity. Initially, I attempted to reciprocate these greetings, but over time, I found myself sticking to acknowledging friends I know with a nod or a smile, rather than engaging with everyone.
Currently, as a senior, I spend a lot of time feeling sleep-deprived and often find myself disconnected from the social atmosphere. While I understand that greeting others is part of the social norm, I sometimes worry that not saying “hi” to acquaintances might be misinterpreted as rudeness or indifference. But the truth is, everyone has moods and moments when they aren’t in the mindset for conversation. It can be frustrating when the absence of a greeting leads others to judge one’s character without understanding underlying reasons.
I genuinely appreciate the social etiquette that encourages kindness and openness, but I also believe that a simple, genuine smile can carry a lot of warmth. Not everyone is comfortable with frequent social exchanges, and that’s okay. Respecting personal boundaries and understanding different social tendencies can foster more inclusive environments.
Please excuse any language gaps, as English isn’t my first language. I hope sharing this perspective resonates with others who might feel similarly misunderstood. Let’s remember that kindness isn’t solely expressed through words—sometimes, a kind gesture or a gentle smile suffices.
Thank you for taking the time to read my reflection.
