Voices from the Hawaiian School System: Behind the Curtain of Silence and Struggles

The educational experience in Hawaii often comes with its unique challenges, revealing a pattern of issues that many students quietly endure. From overlooked problems to troubling incidents, the stories highlight a school system that frequently chooses to suppress uncomfortable truths rather than address them head-on.

One of the most unsettling recent revelations involves an incident within my own school community: a specialized education teacher was arrested on charges of sexual assault involving a student over several months. Looking back, there were subtle warning signs—his popularity and “cool” reputation seemed to overshadow any concerns. Ironically, the school’s policy was to punish students who mentioned such incidents aloud, often sending them straight to the principal’s office. Yet, many teachers turned a blind eye, considering the regulation absurd.

The teacher’s behavior included hosting students at his nearby apartment—an arrangement known to the school and officially sanctioned through permission slips. His classroom was characterized by certain privileges, such as a favored student sitting in a specific chair or allowing students to skip class at will. The room’s lax security, evidenced by an unlocked door during a lockdown drill, and a casual relaxed environment—where classroom work was secondary to socializing or watching movies—painted a picture of a lack of oversight. Despite the issues, I personally recall fondly the comfort of that chair and the naps I took there after he left, a small but memorable part of my high school experience.

In contrast, the replacement teacher was significantly more disciplined and teacher-focused, promptly removing the infamous chair and restoring a more structured environment. However, the shadows of tragedy deepen: reports of a student allegedly jumping out of a window under the influence or possibly committing suicide remain ambiguous, as details about his death are scarce and not openly discussed. Similarly, the tragic death of a girl hit by a car and her subsequent memorial service received extensive media coverage, whereas the fate of the boy involved was almost brushed aside, rarely acknowledged publicly.

Social dynamics and safety concerns also played out vividly on social media platforms. An Instagram account documenting school fights featured videos—some quite disturbing, including one where a girl was caught on camera exposing herself. These incidents underscore systemic issues within the Hawaiian school system, which, in many ways, seems resigned to chaos rather than actively seeking solutions.

Bullying remains a persistent problem. In my previous school, I experienced severe bullying from a group of girls. They targeted me for merely walking around during lunch—an
