Preparing for the GED: Essential Math Skills for a Self-Taught Student
As I approach my 17th birthday, I’ve realized it’s time to take control of my education and prepare for my GED. I started homeschooling in late 2019 when the pandemic first began, but honestly, I’ve never been taught much beyond the basics, and I haven’t really taught myself either. Now, with limited formal instruction, I’m determined to fill in the gaps—particularly in mathematics, which is a crucial component of the GED exam.
Over the past week, I’ve been reviewing fundamental arithmetic skills—long addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division—and I’m comfortable with those operations. My next step is to understand fractions, but I’m unsure where to start.
What are the key mathematical concepts I need to master to pass the GED?
I’m looking for a comprehensive list of skills that will prepare me for the math portion of the exam. I should note, I’m not interested in math as a hobby; my focus is simply to grasp enough to earn a passing grade. I tend to prefer writing and literature as academic interests, but I recognize the importance of a solid math foundation for this goal.
For those familiar with the GED requirements in Texas or elsewhere, your insights would be very helpful. I’m open to answering questions and sharing more about my current skills in the comments.
Thank you to everyone willing to help me on this journey!
