I’m losing hope because of Trump’s “Big Beautiful Bill”

Overcoming Educational and Financial Challenges in Pursuit of a Better Future

Navigating life’s obstacles as a young adult can be profoundly challenging, especially when faced with financial hardship and uncertain prospects. Many individuals find themselves questioning the viability of their educational goals amid economic and legislative changes.

A Personal Perspective on Education, Immigration, and Economic Struggles

Let me share a story that highlights some of these struggles. I recently turned 20 and, in May, made a significant move from Alabama to Texas after experiencing homelessness—a tough situation that led me to live out of my car. Initially, I moved in with an ex-stepfather, hoping to establish stability, but that arrangement isn’t sustainable long-term.

Despite persistent efforts, I’ve faced rejection from even the most basic jobs, and I haven’t secured employment yet. Determined to improve my circumstances, I continue applying and am prepared to accept minimum-wage work if necessary. My ultimate goal has been to pursue higher education—either through a university in Texas or by studying abroad—using my community college GPA (which is currently 3.6 over two semesters) as a stepping stone.

However, recent legislative changes, such as the passage of “Big Beautiful Bill,” threaten to hinder my ability to afford university. Relying on SNAP benefits, I am nearing homelessness once again, and my dreams of studying overseas are feeling increasingly out of reach. The plan was to leverage my community college achievements to gain admission to a university here, and later, a foreign university—perhaps in Germany, as I am most familiar with its educational system—though I am aware that credits from community colleges often aren’t recognized internationally.

Adding to the complexity, my high school GPA is only 2.1 due to unstable schooling caused by my mother’s actions, which impacted my academic record. I believed I’d left those difficulties behind, but current circumstances threaten to derail my progress altogether.

Faced with the potential loss of financial aid and the resurgence of homelessness, I am contemplating dropping out of community college to pursue trade school. Yet, my passion lies in forensic science, a field I have fought hard to pursue. It feels as if everything is working against me, and I find myself deeply overwhelmed and confused about the next steps.

My motivation extends beyond personal success—I want to create a brighter future for my sister, to pave an easier path for her, but I fear that continued hardship may leave her without guidance. I’ve even started learning German as a practical step
