Major Changes to My College Schedule: From a Shortened Week to a Traditional Five-Day Routine

Starting a new academic term often comes with anticipation and planning, but sometimes, unexpected adjustments can disrupt even the best-laid plans. Recently, I experienced this firsthand when my carefully crafted class schedule was unexpectedly altered just days before the semester began.

Initially, I had devised a schedule that allowed for a more manageable and balanced college experience. Most of my courses were scheduled on Tuesdays and Thursdays, with a single class on Monday morning. This arrangement granted me Wednesdays and Fridays off, providing valuable time for rest, study, or personal pursuits. It felt like an ideal setup to balance academics with life outside of university.

However, just days prior to the start of classes, the university announced a change: the only course I was enrolled in has been rescheduled to meet on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday afternoons. This shifts my weekly routine back to a traditional five-day schedule, eliminating the long weekends I had envisioned.

This news was disappointing, especially considering the credits involved. I am enrolled in an 18-credit course load, which is substantial and naturally comes with its own set of challenges. Having previously experienced burnout last year, I was hopeful that a more condensed schedule could help me manage my workload more effectively.

Beyond the academic commitments, the commute is a significant concern. I live approximately an hour away from campus, and increasing the frequency of my trips will undoubtedly add to the stress and time away from home. For me, the main issue isn’t just the number of days spent on campus, but the logistical and physical toll of commuting.

While adjustments are part of university life, unexpected schedule changes can be disheartening. Nonetheless, I remain committed to making the most of this semester, adapting to the new timetable, and finding effective ways to manage my workload and commute.

To fellow students facing similar challenges: flexibility and resilience are key. Remember, setbacks are part of the journey, and with some planning, you can navigate even the most unexpected schedule revisions.
