My journey through college has been marked by numerous challenges. My decision to attend was heavily influenced by my mother and aunt, both of whom emphasized the importance of earning a degree. However, my personal interests lay elsewhere; I was primarily content with working a job or pursuing a trade, which I found more straightforward and satisfying.
Throughout my academic life, I’ve struggled with consistency. The only subjects I tended to excel in were those related to English. I am currently on track to earn my Associate of Social Sciences by spring 2026, but I’ve reached a point where I feel ready to pause.
Preference for Practical Work over Academic Rigor
I’ve discovered that I perform better in a hands-on work environment. For me, a typical day involves doing my job and then unwinding at the end of it. Although work can be stressful and physically taxing at times, it offers a predictable routine—something I find comforting.
Conversely, college has always felt like a relentless barrage of new material, with each week bringing fresh challenges. I often find myself adapting my work to match my professors’ expectations, which involves deciphering their preferences and tailoring my assignments accordingly. This constant need to adjust can be mentally draining.
Considering a Future in Psychology or Trade Skills
Initially, I planned to pursue a degree in psychology because I find the subject intriguing, and my coursework so far has been relatively manageable. However, as I reflect further, I realize that pursuing a trade or entering a vocational profession might be more aligned with my strengths and preferences.
