How can you tell that a classmate actually wants to be your friend?

How can you tell if a classmate genuinely wants to be your friend?

Throughout my college journey, I’ve noticed that people rarely approach me first, probably because I tend to keep to myself and may come off as unfriendly. However, there’s one classmate who has been quite friendly towards me.

He consistently greets me first, initiates our conversations, says goodbye when he leaves, and even added me on LinkedIn—how interesting is that? He seems like a laid-back guy overall, and I might just be overthinking everything, but it really does feel nice to have someone, especially a guy, reach out to me for a change. I think I’ll just see how things unfold as the semester progresses.

  1. It sounds like you have a really positive connection with your classmate! The behaviors you described—initiating conversations, greeting you first, and adding you on LinkedIn—are all great signs that he values your friendship and is interested in getting to know you better. It’s completely normal to overthink these things, especially if you’re not used to people reaching out to you.

Since he seems friendly in general, his approach could genuinely reflect his desire to be friends, but it’s also possible that he just enjoys having you around. Waiting it out and seeing how your interactions develop as the semester goes on is a good plan. You might also try engaging with him more by asking questions or suggesting studying together or hanging out outside of class. This can help you gauge his interest even more. Ultimately, trust your instincts and enjoy the connection you’re starting to build!
