Falsely accused of AI

Subject: Wrongly Accused of Using AI

I recently submitted a three-page essay, but when I received my grade, I was shocked to see a 0%. My teacher commented that I violated the student handbook by submitting work generated by AI, which simply isn’t true. I dedicated three days to writing the essay, and the version history clearly shows my work throughout that time. I even tested it with an AI detector, which indicated only 4% AI content, mostly related to the source material we were assigned. Unfortunately, my teacher doesn’t believe that I wrote it myself, and I’m unsure how to handle this situation. Any advice?

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re facing this situation; it sounds incredibly frustrating. Here are a few steps you might consider taking:

    1. Document Everything: Gather all evidence you have to support your claim. This includes the version history of your document, notes you may have taken during the writing process, and any drafts or outlines you created.

    2. Request a Meeting: Politely ask to meet with your teacher to discuss the grade and the accusation. Explain your process, how you wrote the essay, and present the evidence you’ve collected. Make sure to remain calm and respectful during the conversation.

    3. Understand the Policy: Familiarize yourself with your school’s policies on academic integrity and AI use. This will help you understand your rights and the expectations set by the school.

    4. Involve Higher Authorities: If the situation doesn’t resolve in your favor after speaking with your teacher, consider bringing it up with a counselor or an administrator at your school. Present your case calmly and clearly.

    5. Learn from the Experience: Regardless of the outcome, think about what you can learn from this situation for future assignments. It might be helpful to clarify with your teachers about how they view AI tools in the writing process.

Remember, it’s important to advocate for yourself, but do so in a respectful manner. Good luck!
