AP or IB?

AP or IB?

As I’m selecting my courses, I’d love to get your input on whether I should go for the IB Diploma Program with higher level courses in Math AA, Economics, and Physics, or opt for AP classes, including AP Calculus BC, both AP Economics, AP Statistics, and AP Physics C: Mechanics. I’m aiming to study financial engineering or a related field. What do you recommend?

One Reply to “AP or IB?”

  1. Both the International Baccalaureate Diploma Programme (IBDP) and Advanced Placement (AP) courses have their own strengths, and your decision should be based on your learning style, college goals, and the structure you prefer.

    IBDP Pros:
    – The IBDP emphasizes critical thinking, research, and a more holistic education through the Theory of Knowledge (TOK) and the Extended Essay (EE), which can be beneficial in developing a well-rounded skill set.
    – HL Math AA is rigorous and will prepare you well for financial engineering, as it covers a strong foundation in mathematics.
    – HL Economics provides a solid grounding in economic principles relevant to financial engineering.
    – HL Physics will support your analytical and problem-solving skills.

    AP Pros:
    – AP courses are more focused on specific subject matter, which might allow for deeper understanding in those areas, especially if you enjoy math and sciences.
    – AP Calc BC and AP Physics C are both highly regarded and cover advanced topics that align closely with the quantitative skills needed in financial engineering.
    – AP courses can sometimes provide more flexibility and allow you to delve into a broader range of subjects, like AP Stats and AP Economics.

    Considerations:
    1. College Preferences: Research what colleges you’re interested in and what they prefer. Some schools offer credit for AP classes, while others may value IBDP coursework more.
    2. Learning Style: If you prefer in-depth studies and project-based work, the IBDP might be a better fit. If you excel in exam settings and prefer a course format focused on specific subjects, AP may be more suitable.
    3. Extracurricular Activities: Consider how each program fits into your overall schedule, including extracurricular activities, as both can be demanding in terms of workload.

Ultimately, both paths can adequately prepare you for a financial engineering major. Reflect on your strengths, interests, and future goals to make the best decision for yourself. Good luck!
