Should I take AP Chem online to take AP Capstone next year?

Should I take AP Chemistry online this summer to make room for AP Capstone next year?

For those unfamiliar, AP (Advanced Placement) classes are college-level courses that can earn you credit in high school. I’m currently a rising junior, and next year I’ll be enrolled in AP U.S. History, AP Physics 1, AP Chemistry, AP Calculus BC, AP English Language, Studio Art 3, and French 3. For my senior year, I plan to take all AP classes for my core subjects, alongside AP Studio Art and French 4 DE, which leaves me with one extra elective to fill—most likely something like anatomy (non-honors, non-AP). For context, this year I’m taking AP World, AP Precalculus BC, and AP Psychology.

I’m thinking about enrolling in AP Chemistry online this summer to free up space for AP Seminar, but I’m uncertain about it. I had hoped to choose an elective that’s more focused on English, but most of my classmates next year will be a year younger, and I don’t know much about the AP Seminar class yet. I’ve heard it’s a solid course, but I also know a few people in it who haven’t done well. What should I do?

  1. It sounds like you have a packed schedule next year! Taking AP Chemistry online over the summer could be a smart move if it allows you to take AP Capstone (specifically AP Seminar) in your junior year while maintaining a balanced workload. Here are a few things to consider in making your decision:

    1. Workload and Study Habits: AP Chemistry is typically a challenging class due to the depth of the material. Make sure you’re comfortable with the online format and that you have good time management skills to keep up with the coursework over the summer.

    2. Interest in English and Research: If you’re looking for a more English-focused class, AP Seminar might be more aligned with your interests since it emphasizes critical thinking, writing, and research skills. Consider whether the opportunity to engage in discussions and projects in AP Seminar excites you more than the content of AP Chemistry.

    3. Impact on College Applications: Colleges often look for a rigorous course load, but they also appreciate well-rounded students. Taking AP Seminar could help you showcase your strengths in English and research, which might benefit your future applications.

    4. Experience of Peers: Since you’ve heard mixed reviews about AP Chemistry from peers, it might be helpful to speak to your school’s AP Chem teacher or students who have taken the class before. Get their feedback on the format and how they managed the workload.

    5. Senior Year Plans: Think about how this decision will impact your senior-year schedule and your overall college readiness. If you end up enjoying AP Seminar, it can make your application stand out.

Ultimately, weigh your interest in the subjects against your ability to juggle the workload. If you feel confident about your science skills and can commit to the online AP Chemistry course, it may be worth it to free up a slot for AP Seminar. If not, maybe opt for an elective that aligns better with your interests. Good luck!

What is it with math teachers

What’s the deal with math teachers? I have a fantastic math teacher, but they often skip the explanations. For instance, instead of saying, “This is what a parametric equation is,” and then working through the math, they just write down some numbers and say, “Alright, now we have a parametric equation.” By that point, I’m […]

Someone got caught with a BuzzBall. So, when class started, we had to switch to a different classroom because our teacher wasn’t at school yet. While we were waiting, two staff members entered the room we were leaving and noticed something in the trash—a BuzzBall can. They asked a couple of people if it belonged […]

a fight at my school about a boy

Today at school, two girls got into a fight over a boy. It seems that the girl in pink may have interacted with the boyfriend of the girl in white, though I’m not completely certain. I really feel for the teacher who fell during the chaos; she just had a hip replacement about a month […]
