Am I the Problem? (School Drama)

So, here’s the situation: At my school, there’s been a big focus on formal dresses lately. All my friends are busy picking out their dresses and colors, so I thought it would be helpful to create an account where students from our year could share what dresses they’ve chosen. This way, we could avoid any duplicate dresses on the big day. I set it up about four days ago.

However, when I came home from dance practice today, I noticed another account had popped up for the same purpose. I figured they must have created it after I did since I was unaware of it previously. If I had known, I wouldn’t have made mine. Then, the person behind that account messaged me saying, “my account is better,” implying that theirs was superior. At first, I brushed it off and offered to change my account if it bothered them. They responded with, “oh, I’m just joking. By the way, who’s behind your account?”

I felt uncomfortable sharing my identity since it didn’t matter to the core purpose of the account, but they insisted it was no big deal. When I didn’t reveal who I was, they kept pressing me with questions. Suddenly, another girl, who I think is friends with them, chimed in to ask who I was and insisted that their account was better.

The first account had also made assumptions that I was someone else whose name starts with an “M,” which made me panic a little. I decided to play it cool, but then the girl messaged me again, calling me a “funny seesaw.” I replied, genuinely asking who she was talking about, and she said she knew who I was, which made me uneasy.

I wanted to avoid any conflict, especially since these girls mentioned they were part of the popular crowd, known for being, let’s just say, difficult to deal with. I suggested that if it would help, I could delete my account and let them handle the dress tracking. I didn’t think it was worth the drama. They said that would be great, so I deleted my account.

Now, I’m wondering if I’m the problem here or if they are simply making a fuss over something that shouldn’t be a big deal. For context, these girls are popular and attractive, while I’m more of an extroverted “nobody” who’s well-liked but not known for my looks.

What do you think? Am I causing the drama, or are they overreacting?

One Reply to “am I the problem? (school drama?)”

  1. It sounds like you found yourself in a tricky situation, and it’s understandable that you’re feeling confused about it. Let’s break it down a bit:

    1. Your Intentions Were Good: You created the account to help your classmates avoid wearing the same formal dresses, which is a genuinely helpful initiative. Your intentions weren’t harmful, and you were trying to contribute positively to the school community.

    2. The Reaction from the Other Account: It seems like the girls behind the other account reacted in a way that made the situation more dramatic than it needed to be. It’s not uncommon for people to be competitive or territorial, especially in a high school setting, but that doesn’t reflect on you.

    3. Your Decision to Step Back: Deciding to delete your account to avoid drama was a reasonable choice, especially since you’re not looking for conflict. It’s often easier to take a step back than to engage with people who may enjoy stirring up tension.

    4. Self-Perception: You mentioned feeling like an “extroverted nobody,” which can be tough. Remember that popularity and worth aren’t determined by looks or the opinions of a few people. Your willingness to help others and resolve conflicts shows your character.

In summary, you’re not the drama here. You tried to do something nice, and the response from the other girls was more about their insecurities than anything you did. It’s a normal part of high school dynamics. It’s okay to prioritize your peace over trying to please everyone. Keep being true to yourself, and don’t let their opinions define your worth!
