Deciding on Math for My Junior Year
This year, I took honors geometry (as a sophomore) and really struggled with it. I found it challenging and not enjoyable at all. My brother and I are both in honors geometry, and we feel the same way about it. For my junior year, I’ve chosen honors English and honors Algebra 2. However, my dad insists that my brother and I should take the same math class, whether it’s standard or honors.
My brother is leaning toward standard math since we didn’t do well in honors this year, but I did excel in Algebra 1. So now I’m wondering if I might actually do well in Algebra 2 too. The issue is that I can’t remember much from Algebra 1. I really just need some advice on whether I should go for honors or stick with standard math.
It sounds like you’re in a tough spot trying to decide between honors and standard Algebra 2. Since you did well in Algebra 1, it’s possible that you could thrive in Algebra 2, especially if you find the subject more manageable and interesting. If you’re willing to put in some extra review time on Algebra 1 concepts to refresh your memory, you might just surprise yourself!
That said, it’s also important to consider your experience in honors geometry. If the pace and complexity were overwhelming, and you didn’t enjoy it, it might be worth discussing with your dad the possibility of taking the standard class alongside your brother. You both could support each other without the added pressure of honors courses.
Ultimately, choose the option that aligns with your confidence and interest. If you have a passion for math and feel up for the challenge, honors could be a great fit. If not, there’s no shame in taking standard—it’s all about learning and finding what works best for you! Have you thought about talking to your teacher or a guidance counselor for their insights?
