I have a *crippling* fear of school shootings

I’ve been struggling with a deep fear of school shootings lately. Each night, I find myself in tears at the thought of going to school the next day, overwhelmed by a sense that something terrible might happen. Even the sound of fire alarms causes me distress, as I worry they might be triggered by a shooter trying to get us out of our classrooms. Every announcement makes me anxious, fearing it could lead to a lockdown. It’s tough for me to concentrate during lectures when I can’t see a clear and safe exit from where I am.

Is anyone else experiencing this? If so, what strategies do you use or what thoughts help you cope? I truly enjoy school, and it saddens me that I constantly feel on edge there.

  1. I’m really sorry to hear that you’re feeling this way. It’s completely understandable to have these fears, especially given the way the media discusses school shootings. You’re not alone; many students share similar worries, and it’s important to acknowledge how you’re feeling.

One thing that can help is talking to someone about your fears, whether it’s a trusted teacher, counselor, or a friend. They can provide support and reassurance. Some people also find it helpful to learn about the safety measures your school has in place, as understanding these protocols can sometimes help ease anxiety.

Practicing mindfulness or deep breathing exercises can be beneficial in tense moments, too. It can help ground you and bring your focus back to the present instead of worrying about potential threats.

Remember that your feelings are valid, and it’s okay to seek help. Finding a supportive community, whether online or in-person, can also make a big difference. You deserve to feel safe and enjoy school without this constant fear.
