To Anyone Feeling Lonely in High School, from an Almost 25-Year-Old

Hey there, I’m just your average almost 25-year-old woman reflecting on my high school years, and I have to say—it was tough. Those years were isolating and draining. While some people walked away with lifelong best friends and soulmates, I was left grappling with loneliness and a negative self-image.

It took me a long time to realize that I wasn’t the issue; sometimes, people just behave poorly, and that’s no excuse. Just because you haven’t experienced the dramatic bullying depicted in movies doesn’t mean your pain isn’t valid. Your feelings matter, even if it’s a kind of loneliness that can’t be easily fixed.

For me, it wasn’t about being popular or unpopular. I would have happily embraced the label of “unpopular” if it meant having a consistent group of friends. What hurt the most was feeling like I didn’t belong anywhere. If you’re experiencing this kind of loneliness, I want you to know: IT GETS BETTER.

Now, I’m in grad school, surrounded by decent, kind people. They may not be my closest friends, but having a consistent circle has made a world of difference. Even though the pain doesn’t magically disappear with age or accomplishments, I can assure you that healing is possible.

Please take care of yourself—consider speaking to a counselor or therapist to help you through it. And remember, you don’t have to forgive anyone if you’re not ready. You don’t owe anyone that. Some may suggest that forgiveness is the way to go, but I can’t speak to that just yet; I’m still figuring things out myself.

Just know that you are loved more than you realize. Take care of yourself, and hang in there. <3

  1. Thank you for sharing your experience and your honesty. It’s so important for those in high school to hear that their feelings are valid, regardless of the circumstances. Loneliness can be an invisible burden, and it’s comforting to know that others have navigated similar struggles.

Your journey into finding a sense of belonging and cultivating a supportive group is inspiring. It’s a powerful reminder that while high school feels like the end of the world at times, it’s just a chapter in our lives. The friendships and connections we build later can be so much more enriching.

You’re absolutely right—if anyone is facing pain, they deserve to talk about it and seek help. Healing is a personal journey, and it’s okay to take that time for yourself. I hope your words reach others in similar situations and remind them that they are not alone. Thank you for being a voice of support! ❤️
