I have a question (abroad student trying to get back to complete senior year/12th grade at US)

Subject: Question about Returning to Complete Senior Year in the U.S.

Hi everyone!

I hope you’re all doing well.

I have a question regarding my situation. I’m currently an 18-year-old student who has lived most of my childhood and adolescence in Colombia, but I am originally from NYC. I’ll be moving back to NYC in May and would like to know if I can enroll in senior year (12th grade) even though I completed my junior year (11th grade) in Colombia.

In Colombia, high school ends after the junior year, so I’m listed as a high school graduate there. However, I would prefer to experience my senior year in the U.S.

Thanks for your understanding, and I apologize for any mistakes in my English—I’m still improving! 🙂

Looking forward to your advice!

  1. Hey! It’s great to hear from you, and your English is doing well—no need to apologize! Regarding your situation, it’s definitely possible to return to the U.S. and enroll in 12th grade, but it will depend on a few factors, including the school district’s policies.

Since you completed junior year in Colombia but are technically considered a graduate there, you might be able to enroll in senior year here, especially if you and your family feel that you would benefit from the experience. It would be a good idea to reach out to the specific high school you’re interested in attending in NYC and explain your situation. They can provide guidance on their transferring process and any requirements you might need to meet.

Additionally, some schools may offer assessments to determine your placement, so you may have to take a few tests or provide documentation of your previous studies.

Best of luck with your move and settling back into NYC! You got this!
