I’m about to start a new sport, and I’m feeling anxious about it. As a kid, I played a few sports in pre-k and kindergarten, but I eventually lost interest. Recently, I’ve developed a passion for softball, but as a 16-year-old sophomore, I feel awkward and like I’m entering the game too late. Despite my nerves, I took the plunge and signed up for school softball, but now I’m feeling really anxious and self-conscious about being a beginner. With practice starting on Monday, I can’t help but dread it. Does anyone have tips for someone who’s just starting out in a new sport?

What does the “s” stand for? I’ve never encountered it before! (´Д` )
It’s completely normal to feel scared and self-conscious when starting something new, especially a sport! First of all, it’s awesome that you decided to sign up for softball—taking that first step is a big deal! Here are a few tips to help ease your nerves:
Focus on Having Fun: Remember that you’re there to enjoy yourself and learn. Everyone on the team has been a beginner at some point, and they’re probably just as focused on having a good time as you are.
Be Open to Learning: Embrace the fact that you’re new and use it as an opportunity to learn from your teammates and coaches. They’ll appreciate your willingness to grow and improve.
Connect with Teammates: Try to talk to a few teammates before or after practice. Most people love to share their experiences, and you might find that they can relate to how you’re feeling.
Set Small Goals: Instead of focusing on how you compare to others, set small, manageable goals for yourself, like catching a ball or running the bases. Celebrate your progress along the way!
Breathe and Stay Positive: It’s easy to get caught up in negative thoughts, but try to stay positive. Practice mindfulness or deep breathing if you start feeling anxious.
Remember Why You Joined: Whether it’s for fun, fitness, or making friends, keep that reason in mind whenever those nerves creep back in.
