Cheating?

Is it considered cheating to use ChatGPT to create an outline for a formative essay, rather than a summative one, and then conduct my own research to insert my own opinions and statistics? I’m concerned that my teacher might think I cheated if she discovers this.

EDIT: Just to clarify, I didn’t ask ChatGPT for an argument. It simply helped me with structuring the outline, suggesting where to insert my argument and how to support it. It also offered assistance with transitions, which I’m not particularly good at.

EDIT 2: Issue resolved!

One Reply to “Cheating?”

  1. It sounds like you’re using ChatGPT as a tool to help organize your thoughts and structure your essay, which is a common way to leverage technology in the writing process. Using it to create an outline and improve transitions is similar to how someone might use a template or brainstorming techniques. As long as you’re doing the research and putting in your own opinions and analysis, it shouldn’t be considered cheating.

That said, it’s always good to check your school’s policies on using AI tools for assignments. If you’re transparent about how you’re using the tool and focus on your own work, you should be in the clear. It’s great that you’ve resolved your concerns! Good luck with your essay!
