Best classes for going into politics/ debating?

What are the best classes to take for a future in politics and debating?

Hi everyone! I’m currently in 8th grade, but I’ll be starting high school next year, and I’m really excited about pursuing a career in politics. I want to get involved in debating and public speaking.

I’ve already noted down some classes I’m interested in, like Public Speaking Without Fear, Speech and Debate, Personal Business Law, and Journalism.

If you have any additional suggestions for classes that would help me on my journey, I would really appreciate it! Thank you! 😀

  1. That’s great to hear that you’re interested in politics and debating at such a young age! The classes you’ve already listed are excellent choices. Here are a few more suggestions that could help you develop relevant skills and knowledge:

    1. History or Government: Understanding historical contexts and government structures is crucial for a career in politics. Look for classes that emphasize U.S. history or civics.

    2. Ethics: A class that focuses on ethics can help you think critically about moral issues, which is essential for a career in politics.

    3. Writing or Creative Writing: Strong writing skills are crucial for drafting speeches, proposals, and legislation. A creative writing class can also help you find your voice.

    4. Economics: Understanding economic principles can be very beneficial in politics, especially in dealing with policy-making and budgeting.

    5. Foreign Languages: Learning a language can give you a deeper understanding of different cultures and international issues, which is helpful in global politics.

    6. Debate or Mock Trial: If your school offers advanced debate or mock trial classes, they can provide even more focused training in argumentation and legal processes.

    7. Leadership or Student Government: Engaging in student government or leadership programs can give you hands-on experience in organizing, representing peers, and making decisions.

    8. Social Studies or Psychology: These classes can help you understand human behavior and societal dynamics, which are important in politics.

Always remember to engage in extracurricular activities like debate clubs, student government, or volunteering for political campaigns—even outside of school. These experiences will complement your coursework and help you build a network. Good luck on your political journey!
