Which elective course should I take?

Subject: Help Me Choose an Elective!

I’m torn between two electives: Popular Music Ensemble and Music Theory, and I could use some advice. Here’s a brief overview of each course:

Popular Music Ensemble: This course invites students to dive into contemporary genres like pop, rock, and R&B. You’ll collaboratively create exciting performances, whether you sing or play guitar, bass, drums, keyboards, or another instrument. It’s a fantastic opportunity to hone your musical skills in a modern band environment, and no prior experience is required—just a love for music and a team spirit! (Practical/Performing Art)

Music Theory 1/2: This introductory course covers essential music theory concepts, including rhythms, meter notation, key signatures, scales, intervals, triads, and various cadences. The fundamentals you’ll learn apply to a wide spectrum of music styles, from classical (1600 to 1900) to jazz and popular music.

Unfortunately, I can only select three electives total, and I’m committed to two academy transfer courses that I really want to continue because they offer amazing opportunities.

I’m inclined to choose Popular Music Ensemble since it seems fun and allows for growth in a modern band setting, and my passion for music is strong. However, I’ve heard that Music Theory is crucial for musicians, and I currently have no experience with it.

I’m leaning towards Music Theory, but I’m not entirely convinced. What do you think I should choose? I’m interested in hearing everyone’s thoughts!

  1. It sounds like you’re at an exciting crossroads with your elective choices! Both Popular Music Ensemble and Music Theory have unique benefits, so it ultimately depends on what you hope to gain from your experience.

If your goal is to enhance your performance skills and collaborate with peers in a fun, dynamic environment, then Popular Music Ensemble might be the way to go. It’s a great opportunity to immerse yourself in contemporary music styles, develop your skills on your instrument, and enjoy the camaraderie that comes with making music in a group.

On the other hand, Music Theory is foundational for understanding how music works. If you’re serious about pursuing music in the long term, having a grasp of music theory will serve you well. It will help you analyze music more deeply, improve your songwriting skills, and enhance your overall musicianship. The concepts you learn in theory can also directly apply to the music you might encounter in the ensemble setting.

If you’re leaning towards Music Theory, consider how much you want to dive into the academic side of music right now. Remember, theory does not have to be dry—it can enhance your appreciation of the music you love!

In terms of a balanced approach, you could think about which course aligns more with your current interests and future aspirations. If you envision yourself performing and want to build confidence and skills in that arena, go for the ensemble. If you’re curious and excited about the intricacies of music, then Music Theory may be the smarter choice for a deeper understanding.

Ultimately, choose the course that excites you the most. Whichever you pick, make the most of the learning experience, and you’ll be developing crucial skills either way!
