Regular classes VS Honors and AP classes

Regular Classes vs. Honors and AP Classes

Last year, after spending a couple of years in online school, I transferred back to my high school, and wow, what a whirlwind it was. There was a lot of drama, fights, and it just didn’t provide a conducive learning environment. Because my freshman transcript wasn’t reviewed, I found myself placed in classes I had already completed in 8th and 9th grade. I managed to switch out of most of them, except for math.

To my surprise, I received a typical sophomore schedule, which included Algebra 1. It was frustrating! Alongside that, I had regular classes in English, Biology, and other subjects at the same level. The environment in those classes was challenging; many students disrespected the teachers, hardly engaged, and constantly asked me for answers. It was incredibly annoying.

In my fifth-period biology class, some students would bully me for answers, and in Algebra 1, I was teased for finishing my work faster than my classmates. English was a chaotic experience, covering topics we had learned back in elementary school.

When scheduling came around at the end of the year, I decided to enroll in all honors, AP, and college prep classes. What a difference! This year has been so much better for my academic experience. While not everyone in these classes is a perfect student (nor am I), it’s incredibly refreshing to be surrounded by peers who are motivated to learn and succeed.

I don’t want to rant for too long, but if anyone has questions, feel free to ask! I’m also curious—have you noticed a similar disparity at your school?

  1. It’s great to hear that you’ve found a more positive and productive learning environment in your honors and AP classes! Your experience highlights a common challenge many students face in traditional classrooms, where the motivation and engagement levels can vary significantly. It sounds like the atmosphere in your previous classes was not conducive to learning, which can be incredibly frustrating, especially when you’re eager to advance your education.

The difference between regular classes and honors/AP classes is often quite stark, as you’ve noted. In many schools, honors and AP classes attract students who are more motivated, and this can create a more focused and supportive environment. It’s so refreshing to be surrounded by peers who share your drive and passion for learning.

As for the discrepancy, I think it’s something many students notice. While every school is different, the variance in class dynamics can sometimes lead to a huge difference in academic experience. It can be tough for students in lower-level classes, especially if they’re trying to keep up with their work and deal with distractions from peers who aren’t as dedicated.

Have you found any strategies to handle those challenges in your previous classes that you think might help others in similar situations? And how do you feel the transition to honors/AP classes has impacted your overall high school experience? Your insights could really help others who might be facing similar struggles!
