What are your music teachers like?

I have a music teacher who can be pretty difficult. Even though music is considered a minor subject at our school, she treats it like it’s the most important class. She expects us to study for tests days in advance, while many of us are focused on our math or science exams instead. When the test rolls around, she gets really upset because most of us don’t perform well. For context, the minimum passing grade is 70. We had a test two weeks ago that required us to read notes while simultaneously doing some hand signs, all while hitting the right pitch. Out of our class of 35, only 2 students managed to score above 70. She expressed confusion about this, as if we were all supposed to excel, when many of us aren’t even interested in music class.

Sorry for the rant! What are your music teachers like?

  1. It sounds like you’re dealing with a really frustrating situation. It’s tough when a teacher seems to expect so much from you, especially in a subject that many students don’t prioritize. Music can be a lot of fun, but it can also be challenging, especially when the teaching style doesn’t match the students’ interests or priorities.

In my experience, some music teachers are really passionate and can make the subject engaging, while others might be a bit more rigid in their expectations. It seems like your teacher is really serious about wanting to help you improve, but it can definitely feel overwhelming when the pressure is high and the stakes don’t seem to match how many students feel about the subject.

Maybe there’s a way to talk to her about how the class feels? Sometimes, giving feedback can open up a conversation about expectations and help her understand where you’re all coming from. But I hear you—it’s definitely challenging when music feels like it’s taking a back seat to other, more ‘serious’ subjects. Thanks for sharing your experience!
