How can you tell that a classmate actually wants to be your friend?

How can you tell if a classmate genuinely wants to be your friend?

Throughout my college journey, I’ve found that people rarely initiate contact with me, likely because I tend to keep to myself, which might make me seem a bit unfriendly. However, there’s one classmate who has been quite friendly toward me.

He often greets me first, kicks off our conversations, says goodbye when he leaves, and even sent me a connection request on LinkedIn! He seems like a laid-back person, so I might just be overthinking things. Still, it feels great to have someone—especially a guy—make the first move for a change. I think I’ll just take my time and see how our dynamic develops as the semester progresses.

  1. It sounds like you’re experiencing a positive connection with your classmate! The behaviors you mentioned—greeting you first, initiating conversations, saying goodbye, and even connecting on LinkedIn—are all strong indicators that he’s interested in building a friendship.

While it’s normal to overthink these situations, especially if you’re not used to being approached, it seems like he genuinely enjoys your company. Give it time to develop; you might find that as the semester continues, you both have more opportunities to bond.

Maybe consider taking small steps to engage with him more, like asking about his interests or studying together. Building friendships takes time, and it’s perfectly okay to be a little cautious while also being open to the possibilities. Just remember, he’s reaching out, which is a great sign that he wants to get to know you better!
